New Painting Progress

It has been a while since I've worked on a large painting -this new one is 2'x7' and based on the same series of photos that inspired "Reverberation". Here are three stages of the process that has taken place over the last couple of weeks. The right side is more done than the left side so far but there is still a lot of work to do.

New painting above the couch

Recommended Music: Grasslung "Sincere Void"

I bought Grasslung's "Sincere Void" on Amazon yesterday (just seven bucks!) and I've been playing it a lot while working on the new paintings and class work. This quiet ambient music is a shimmering, warm soundtrack for a cool gray autumn day.

A recent review of the album described it as "bare in the best way" made up of "melancholic tapestries". Recommended.

New Work: Moon

Untitled (moon), Acrylic on Canvas on Panel, 24x36"

Untitled (moon), Acrylic on Canvas on Panel, 24x36"

I painted this soft-focus image of the surface of the moon with layers of brushed paint, transparent white washes and airbrushed paint. I have been working on it for probably for a couple months but it wasn't until I added a bit more haze this weekend that it really came together.

I don't watch many horror movies, but it is October and that means it is time to watch Suspiria (1977) by Dario Argento again. The sets, the lighting, the soundtrack, and the overall stylization of the movie makes this horror movie more watchable than most. Photos here by OfScotland.

Wolf among Wolves

A lot of people have been posting this video but I had to join in. It reminded me of the photography by Bjarni Gríms for Ben Frost's dark, tense album "By the Throat":

Wise up

Posting has been brief lately - I'm working on a few small experiments - graphite drawings of stone statues on very heavily gessoed canvases stretched over panels. It seems to be working so far. I'll post pictures after they are more finished.

On another note, I re-watched Magnolia again last week - still probably one of the most affecting movies I've ever seen:

Gregory’s current direction in art is a series of paintings based on the behavior of prime numbers. He is exposing their elusive ability to create shapes and patterns when they are distributed in set ranges on predetermined arrays. There are many unanswered questions about prime numbers and why they behave as they do. In these paintings he is acting as an interpreter of his own vision, but following the set rules of prime numbers in mathematics; to perhaps discover some order in the sequence of prime numbers.

Gregory is also exploring the idea of brush-less painting using a paint drip method. This involves applying paint to the surface of the canvas and allowing it to form natural concave circles. Gravitational force causes the paint to form these circles in a very uniform manner. This also adds a subtle 3 dimensional aspect to the traditional 2 dimensional painting, giving the viewer the ability to engage more in the painting’s viewing space.

Gregory is a graduate of the State University of New York and Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. He is now attending Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York for his MFA in Painting.
