Another found photo + Vija Celmins

I found this photo at the flea market last weekend too. The back says "B-52 and escorts" - it reminded me of paintings like this:

This clip is the opening scene from Wim Wender's Paris, Texas. I saw the 1984 movie for the first time last week and loved it. It's a rich and beautifully composed film - it was really fantastic and a visual inspiration.

Artists Studios

I think you can tell a lot about an artists by their studio - things they find attractive, their resources, and even a little about their personalities. It may be no surprise then that Remington's studio is filled with western artifacts and Vija Celmins has a spare, white studio. I recently relocated my own studio from the dining room to the kitchen nook which is a bit of a downsize but adequate. I did a post awhile ago about several of my studio manifestations here.

War Planes: Daniel Miller and Vija Celmins

I think any artist would be honored to be compared to Vija Celmins (I know I would)...well, I was browsing Etsy today looking at some local artists and came upon Daniel Miller's Etsy page and subsequently his personal art site. I loved his drawings of war planes:



I personally enjoy the older planes more than the more modern planes. Maybe because of my long-time interst in World War II history, or maybe because they have a different aura. They reminded me of this (now) classic American painting recently purchased by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art :

Toba Khedoori has long been one of my favorite artists. I especially enjoy how unexpected some of her imagery can be while maintaining a unified tone, atmosphere, and sense of mystery. Her works from last year include subjects like holes, logs, a stick, and blank windows. The newer work (Holes) of hers posted above reminds me a little of the visual opposite of Celmin's Star Field drawings. The fireplace may also relate to the nighttime paintings I posted about a few weeks ago by Dan Witz. I would love to experience the scale of Khedoori's work in person, but sadly I have not had the good fortune.
