We had a busy weekend of hiking:

To top it all off we saw a black bear from the highway on the way home!

New Aerial Photos

overlooking South Park valley
I love the abstract quality of this image.

I was in the plane for over six hours today and it was a beautiful day. I love the Rocky Mountains.

Deer Sentinel

On a recent hike in Golden, Colorado a deer watched our whole descent down Table mountain:

A Moment

This sunset in the Moraine valley of Rocky Mountain National Park was incredible.
We also saw a mother-moose and her two young but I wasn't able to get a decent photo through the brush. Here's the blurry photo I did get (the third one is coming through the brush at the top of the image, but it is really hard to see);

New Aerial Photo

I took this today while flying over the front range. Denver doesn't have any snow, but the high mountains do.

A really cool high-altitude flower we found up at James peak today.

Table Mountain Trail

North Table Mountain Trail, Golden, CO

This trail is just ten miles from Denver in the city of Golden - overlooking the city and the giant Coors plant in Golden. The trail takes you to the top of the mountain/mesa where a huge plain spreads out (second photo - with a glimpse of deer in the distance). Park in the dirt lot on the map here. Well worth the short drive.

Songs of the Rockies

I found an illustration from Songs of the Rockies, by Charles Edwin Hewes, 1915-1921 in the visitors center in Estes Park yesterday and sought out the book online. I was happy to find that you can read the book on Google books here. There are many beautiful drawings (block prints) by Dean Babcock are found throughout the book. I had trouble limiting myself, so I've posted a lot of the drawings:

I love this drawing of ptarmigans. I posted about these beautiful mountain birds in September.

Last Aerial Photos

You read right - these are some of the last new aerial photos I'll be posting. All good things must come to an end and I only have one more day left doing aerial survey photography. It has been a good run, and definitely influenced my art work of the last year. These two photos are of Pike's Peak - taken yesterday morning. It looks like I went out with a bang - my last flight was a dramatic look over the Cripple Creek mine at the foot of Pike's Peak. Although I won't be posting many more new aerial photos, I may dig up some old ones from time to time.
