Dario Robleto at D'Amelio Terras

Probably my favorite show in NY was Dario Robleto's "The Minor Chords Are Ours" at D’Amelio Terras. While most of the works are aesthetically pleasing without the rich content/back-story, they really come alive after reading through his process. I think you will agree:

Dario Robleto
I Wish The Ocean Sounded More Like Dusty Springfield 1996, 2010
32 x 49 x 1 3/4 inches
81.3 x 124.5 x 4.4 cm
Apple blossom seashells, altered sound of shells, glue
A collection of seashells were grouped into a series of pairs. Each couple was then serenaded with a different Dusty Springfield song for 48 hours at a time. Each seashell’s partner was then returned to the shore

Ane Graff, "Sliding"

I'm really late on this one, but enjoy these images from Ane Graff's most recent show, "Sliding" from a few months ago. I interviewed her in the fall of 2008 - you can read it here. The installation of this show is very inspiring:

Embrace! Opening Tomorrow Night!

After months of installation - the Denver Art Museum will unveil Embrace! this Saturday night. The show is made up of site-specific works by 17 different artists. I've posted about some of the progress and artists in the past - and I'm looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. Some of the artists like Denver-based Rick Dula have been there for weeks (probably months) working on huge murals, while others have installed works seemingly overnight. The museum will be putting out a two-volume publication about the exhibition and the history of installation art. This will be a good resource for those of you not able to see the works in person, but as with most art - it is much better experienced in person.

The Denver Art Museum has shown numerous exceptional shows since we have moved here (Radar and Daniel Richter were two of my favorites). While I don't exactly know what to expect tomorrow, one thing is for sure - this will be a exhibition that you won't see anywhere else. I think this show is a great way to make use of some of the really unconventional spaces in the Hamilton Building.

There will be never-before-seen works from: El Anatsui (Nigeria/Ghana), Kristin Baker (U.S.), Matthew Brannon (U.S.), Rick Dula (U.S., Denver), Katharina Grosse - pictured above -(Germany), Christian Hahn (Germany), Nicola López (U.S.), John McEnroe (U.S., Denver), Rupprecht Matthies (Germany), Tobias Rehberger (Germany), Charles Sandison (Finland/U.K.), Dasha Shishkin (U.S./Russia), Shinique Smith (U.S.), Jessica Stockholder (U.S.), Timothy Weaver + eMAD (U.S., Denver), Lawrence Weiner (U.S.) and Zhong Biao (China).

Rachel Hawthorn

photographs © 2009 Rachel Hawthorn

Our Art Appreciation guest artist this week was my friend Rachel Hawthorn who gave us a lot of interesting background and insight into her work in regard to the nature of memory and the conceptual framework that informs her multi-disciplinary art. I recommend taking some time to look through her website and explore her quiet photographs as well as web-based content and video.

Tips for Artists Who Want to Sell

Just this week I've had two people ask me how to get their work or the work of a friend of theirs "out there" - mostly wanting to know how to sell art. I generally tell people there is no magic formula, but maybe there is...
