According to the Statement for Martin Brief's Dictionary series,
"These abstract ink drawings are created through a system that is based on the structure of the original text. The drawings in The Dictionary Series are made by tracing the blocks of text on each page of the dictionary. The resulting line drawings define the space where the text had been. The patterns already exist and are merely revealed through the drawing process. The power of these drawings comes from this direct, economical process that defines through negation rather than addition."
