Studio Visit: Jeff Page

I stopped by my good friend Jeff's studio at Redline yesterday and thought it would be fun to share a little behind-the-scenes of his studio. Jeff primarily works with collage and painting and his new works were a real treat to see:

Thanks Jeff!

My Parents

I've been meaning to mention this on my blog for some time now - I made a website/blog for my parents (semi) recently that showcases their art and photography. As previously mentioned, I am very fortunate and thankful to come from artistically inclined families on both sides. My parents express their art in different ways, mostly because of the contrast of their right-brained/left-brained personalities. My Dad has been making great doodle/drawings on meeting notes for years, and we've finally started documenting them. My Mom works a lot with collage and multi-media. Check out their work!

Tim McFarlane

I love these scratched out and erased photographs by Tim McFarlane:

Infinite Boundary(detail), 2008, altered photocollage, 20" x 20"
Burnout(sky), 2008, altered photocollage, 12" x 12"

His abstract paintings are definitely worth noting as well. When flying back from Pueblo, CO last week, we flew over this pattern in the landscape that reminded me of his paintings:Aerial photo by Nathan Abels

Here's a couple recent monochromatic examples of his paintings:

Guest Blogger: Jeff Page

Jeff Page is a collage artist, photographer, and designer based here in Denver. You can find his work here - where he also has links to his etsy site and two great blurb books. Also check out the blog Jenn Ski's praise of his work. Jeff has tons of recommendations and inspiration to share with everyone on this beautiful Monday morning. These lists should give you some insight into his methodology and clue you into more ways to enjoy his artwork:

While involved in making my art, my music likings swing from the obscure to the sensational. I like upbeat pop (like Madonna) or punky dance stuff like LCD Soundsystem or the Rapture to keep my energy up so that I can plow through my projects and dance along the way. But I take my work pretty seriously too and like to think and think and (sometimes) over-think my way through the art making process- which is where the desire for the minimal, yet complicated, electronics of various groups like Monolake or Gas comes in.

MUSIC to make art to:

Lcd Soundsystem- Sound of Silver
Monolake- Polygon Cities
Madonna-Confessions on the Dancefloor
Tarentel- From Bone to Satellite
Thievery Corp- Richest Man in Babylon

My taste for visual Artists also swings from the obscure to the sensational (sort of). I love Designer-ish Art and basically obsess over the careers of Rex Ray and Johnathan Adler. But I also admire and aspire to the thoughtfulness of Wangechi Mutu and Matthew Ritchie's work.

Rex Ray, "Cyphellae"

ARTISTS:
Wangechi Mutu
Johnathon Adler
Rex Ray
Ryan McGinness
Matthew Ritchie

What? A TV category? I can’t deny it- TV inspires me. Especially Project Runway, the writers from LOST, the eclectic talent of Amy Sedaris in Strangers with Candy and raunch connoisseurs - Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

TV:
LOST
Project Runway
Strangers with Candy
South Park
The Golden Girls

Thanks Jeff! You can find more guest lists here.

New Blog Press

"We take good care of our bird"
Katie Runnels, 2006, Acrylic on panel, beeswax, oil

A very nice plug from a SCAD friend of mine at her blog. Check out the work of Katie Runnels on her blog or on her new flickr site. You can count on Katie for a wealth of style, creativity and a lyrical or light-hearted handling of many mediums including sculpture, encaustic, painting, and collage. She also has a new etsy store.

Collages of James Michael Starr

"Secret" paper collage on canvas

"A life" paper collage on canvas

Here's a couple of nice warm juxtapositions by James Michael Starr that use medical diagrams in an atypical way. His website is difficult to navigate, but there are some gems including these two collages.

Neither Hair Nor There

My haircut yesterday was long overdue, but maybe not as overdue as the subjects of Henrik Drescher's collages:

Collages of Agnes Montgomery

In keeping with a post from a few days ago, I've discovered another interesting artist from the work they did for album covers. Agnes Montgomery, a self-taught artist, did the artwork for most of the Panda Bear releases including the upcoming "Person Pitch" full-length. She must use vintage sources for her collages because they have the unique color quality that is often found in old books or magazines. Check out her work - and the music of Panda Bear too.
