Found Friday on a Monday

I had a busy weekend - so my 'Found Friday' feature will take place on a Monday. Here it is:
On the back it says
"Sun. Mar. 30, 1941; Lansing Airport"

Found Friday; Achemon Sphinx Moth

This moth was found a few days ago at the hangar - it was taken outside, but tragically it did not survive the extreme heat we've been experiencing here. It is a beautiful specimen - so we got a bell jar and some moss to display it. I found out it is a Achemon Sphinx Moth.

Found Friday

I love it when photos have writing on them. The photo book I found last weekend had a lot of writing on the photos. This one has a pretty common 1,2,3,4 below the ladies to identify them.

Found Friday - Found Recordings

A couple of years ago, I stumbled on a trove of home recordings at a thrift store in Fort Wayne, Indiana which I quickly bought up for a dime a piece. Not too long ago I started trying to record them to mp3. Most of them were badly damaged and I was unable to record form the majority of them. There were a few that came out well, and a few more that came out ok. I've compiled the decent ones (the last two tracks are pretty poor quality) for you to listen to. It is a fascinating collection of short audio letters, talk about the war (WWII), home recordings of the piano and accordian, recordings from the radio, etc. All the information I have on these is that the main two people on the 1945 recordings are M. M. White and Helen. Some of the records have scrawled notes, my favorites being the black markered ones on which they wrote "bad." There were no second takes - so there's a good live, conversational feel to these recordings. I have tagged the mp3s so it should come up as one album on your mp3 player. The audio quality is very rough- covered in a thick layer of fuzz, but sometimes that's refreshing with the over-polished state of most new recordings. Here are some scans of some of the records - some were on a vinyl-coated cardboard disc, some were on vinyl (the ones that sounded better), some were on vinyl-coated aluminum (most of which had peeled off the metal). You can find the collection here, here or here. I especially like the track "Married Life for Us".

This is what most of the look like - on vinyl-coated cardboard

Found Friday : Double Feature

This image is probably my favorite from my growing collection of vintage double-exposures.

I've also been meaning to highlight the Quiet American : a website of found sounds and field recordings including interesting "one minute vacations"

New Photos

I am now the proud owner of a new computer and I should be back on a semi-regular routine of blog posts and will begin re-focusing on art and art-related things. First I wanted to share a couple of photos that I took last Tuesday on the way back from Wyoming. The sun was setting over the rockies and it casts beautiful reflections and long shadows all over the front range:

Looking back on what was my first year of blogging, there were several short-lived features and semi-regular posts that I may be revisiting this year. I had several guest bloggers, a "media Monday" feature - based on actual art mediums rather than artists or works, and a "found Friday" feature where I posted pieces from my ever-growing collections of found photos and papers. I'm looking forward to another year of sharing and I'm thankful for whatever readership may come my way. Thanks everyone.

New Feature: Found Fridays

This is the first installment of what will become a weekly feature called "Found Friday". I've been collecting vintage photos, books, records, and various paper products for over eight years now and on Fridays I'll spotlight something from my collection. Today's photo is dated 1922, "Bob Staggs" on the back. I believe I picked this up in Kansas.

Found Friday : Antique Botanical Prints

I found these etchings from 1806 at an antique/junk store while in Savannah last weekend. Instead of just featuring one image I'm posting all four of my great finds.

Found Friday

I saw some white cranes fly under our plane on Wednesday, and it reminded me of this old book illustration I found.

Found Friday

This is my favorite found photo for the holidays. I got this a few years ago and I've used it on Christmas cards, mix cd covers, etc. Classic in my book.

Found Friday

This photo was my great find at the flea market this last Sunday. It's a big print too - approximately 9x12". It was in with a lot of other photos of this kid and his family in Germany during WWII or shortly after the war. This shot was the best of the bunch.

Found Friday: A Ship

While in Silverton, CO last week, we stopped by one of the better antique shops we've been in. We got seduced by the charm of this hand-made folk art ship. I love the wobbly lines, the color combination, the somewhat clumsy paint job and the overall uniqueness of this. Great find indeed (that's our new table and chairs too):

Found Friday : Photomatic

Both sides of a rusted Photomatic photo - precursor to classic photo-booth photos.
