Nevadaville Revisted.

Last weekend we took a drive on the Peak to Peak byway from Central City to Estes Park, Colorado. We made a stop in one of the closer ghost towns to Denver called Nevadaville. It's hard to believe that during the peak of mining prosperity in the area more than a thousand people lived here. Here are several then and now comparison photos.

I've posted about Nevadaville previously and the art of Andre Yi.

Charming Baker

Falling Boy (The Descent Into Mediocrity) oil on linen

I love these works by Charming Baker. There's a good sense of humor to the works and his site. I think he makes exceptional use of negative space in his compositions - and has some pretty great titles too.

Mind Your Head (oil on wood)That Which Is Robust Can Rarely Bully the Beauty Out Of That Which Is Ephemeral

Also - Check out this free (and legal) download called Epoche by Fiktion -c/o Frukt Recods. Fiktion writes, "It's an invite from Fiktion for you and your ipod to take a walk arround in your local woodland. To get lost and to find your way, to see patterns and to break patterns. Be sure to listen to the album as a whole, and we're sure you'll have a unique journey in some individual way. " The album comes with a beautiful pdf "booklet" and is well worth a download.

For any of you visual artists reading this - these two musicians are both recommended listening for making some art.

Kristen Schiele at David B. Smith Gallery

Kristen Schiele, Industrial, Oil on Canvas, 21"x30"

Three of Swords, 2008, 48" x 46", oil on canvas

I finally got over to David B. Smith gallery to see the current group show. I really enjoyed these two pieces by Kristen Schiele and had a nice chat with Dave about gallery name change (from Limited Addiction) and all that 2009 has in store for him (books? prints? new artists! Josh Keyes show!).

If you haven't seen the show that's up right now, do. I thought it was more diverse than their previous group shows and represented a broader range of painting and sculpture - broader than the typically narrow scope of the Juxtapoz/low-brow/pop-surrealism/whateveryouwanttocallit scene that they often (perhaps unfairly) get lumped into. I'm excited to see their scope grow as their gallery grows and I'm really looking forward to their upcoming shows this year.

Berndt Savig

A Forced Intimacy: Recent Painting and Sculpture

On display at Sliding Door Gallery beginning February 6, 2009 are recent paintings and sculpture by Berndt Savig. Returning to the female figure and visage as the primary focus in this body of work, the paintings are psychological studies of imagined individuals with introspective, pessimistic or emotionally withdrawn demeanors. The larger scale of the paintings creates a forced intimacy with the viewer.

Memory Houses

Memory Houses is an in progress series of images that continues Rachel Hawthorn's exploration of the way our domestic environments shape our memories and perception. Each image features a model of a house that Rachel lived in, constructed of only the parts remembered. Anything that is
forgotten has been left out. These models were placed in the landscape and photographed from different perspectives to enhance the experience of the distances between current perception and memory of the past.

Thrill of Permanence

"Everything we see falls apart, vanishes. Nature is always the same, but nothing in her that appears to us, lasts. Our art must render the thrill of her permanence along with her elements, the appearance of all her changes. It must give us the taste of her eternity."

--Paul Cezanne

I scanned these engravings from an old World Book. They are currently residing in my "to frame" file. Notice the unexplored regions.
