I found this interesting post at Strange Maps stating that the United States government has direct ownership of almost 650 million acres of land (2.63 million square kilometers) - nearly 30% of its total territory. In fact, nearly 37% of Colorado is owned by the government.

Theresa has reminded me that "you don't have to own it to enjoy it". I've always wanted to own some land. But in a round about way I guess I do own some wonderful pieces of this country.
